Advice

The size guide

A hat in the right size makes itself forgotten: no mark on the forehead, no catching the wind. It all starts with one simple measurement.

A hatter places the tape measure above a customer’s eyebrows to measure her head circumference

The method

Measuring your head

  1. Take a dressmaker’s tape measure.

  2. Place it about one centimetre above the eyebrows.

  3. Run it around the widest part of the head, above the ears.

  4. Keep the tape level, without pulling it tight.

  5. Read the measurement in centimetres: that is your head circumference.

Between two sizes, choose the larger: a slightly roomy hat is easily adjusted with a foam band; the reverse is not true.
